Description

HOLY CARNOSA PLANT:

This plant is named so in the honour of an 18th century botanist named Thomas hoy. These are generally called as Wax Plants, Indian Rope Plant or Porcelain Flower Plants due the waxy nature of the flowers. The flowers on these plants grow in clusters which are star shaped and pinkish white in colour. The flower generally blooms during spring, summer or fall. The leaves of the plants are also waxy and produced on woody vining stems. These are perfect for hanging baskets.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PLANT:

SOIL:

  • A well-draining, loamy soil of pH 6.0-7.5.
  • These plants prefer moist and humid soil.

LIGHT:

  • Position your plant such that it gets indirect bright sunlight and protection from strong sunlight in the afternoon or else it will scorch/burn the leaf/ leaf fall.
  • They require indirect sunlight for their optimum growth. Though they can be tolerant of the low lights, but the leaves may be dark.
  • Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade.

WATERING:

  • Water the plant only when 2-2.5 inches of the top soil has dried.
  • Watering schedules to be taken care of especially during the warmest months of the year and hence requires a more frequent waterings.
  • Overwatering will lead to rotting of the roots. The signs of overwatering are yellowing or browning of leaves and stalks.

FERTILIZING:

  • Fertilizing throughout the growing season i.e., spring to summers (April-November), preferably every 4 weeks or so will boost growth of the plant and faster bloom.

PRUNING:

  • Regular pruning of hoya will lead to delayed flowering. Let the spent flower stalks remain on the plant since the blooms occur in clusters, therefore, new flowers may appear. But do remove when no flowering observed.

PROPAGATION OF PLANT:

Stem cutting

  1. Cut a stem of 10-15 centimetres/ 6 inches long, with 2 and more leaves.
  2. Plant these stems in 1-3 inches deep moist soil, away from direct sun. OR the stems can be placed in a pot containing water(similar to money plants). The leaves should be removed from the lower section of the cutting that will be submerged in water or placed in soil.
  3. Plant in spring or summer (as the roots will develop faster)
  4. The roots will develop within 4 weeks of time.
